Speeders beware: The Post Falls Police are now armed with a new electronic system that’s helping reduce the amount of time it takes to write speeding tickets.

The Post Falls Police Department is the first in Idaho to start issuing e-tickets and police officers are saying its helping them spend more time on patrol and less time writing up tickets.

The new system is already installed in three patrol cars and it allows officers to automatically issue tickets by scanning or swiping the bar code on the back of a driver's license. All the personal information is then input in the computer database from the bar code.

Within a few seconds the e-ticket is electronically sent to the courts and police department and the driver gets a printed copy.

The program was pioneered by the Post Falls Police Department and the Idaho Supreme Court and the hope is the new e-tickets will soon replace paper ones.

“It allows us to maximize our time and it also serves to benefit the public in the unfortunate situation in traffic stop they're not being detained as long as they would have been,” Patrick Eismann of the Post Falls Police Department said.

The Post Falls Police Department is encouraging other local agencies in the state to start using the new system. Authorities say the new e-ticket system eliminates the paperwork and a dozen steps officers would normally go through so they can spend more time on patrol.
